Timber construction remains a crucial lever on the journey towards a climate-positive construction industry. In this newsletter, we highlight the latest developments in carbon removals, explore the market mechanism behind CO₂ certification, and emphasize timber's role as a sustainable building material.
We present updates on our international methodology, provide insights into our expanding project portfolio, and illustrate targeted applications of Carbon Removal Credits from timber construction projects—whether for improving carbon footprints, supporting project financing, or facilitating customer acquisition.
Additionally, our investment research examines the dynamics surrounding raw material pricing, emissions trading, and natural climate solutions. Furthermore, we introduce DMBAU AG, a member demonstrating how flexible, systematic construction can successfully integrate with climate protection initiatives.
Our international methodology Mass Timber Carbon Removals is currently undergoing successful accreditation with the ICROA-endorsed Verra Carbon Standard. Following positive feedback, we are finalizing key details, including sustainable wood procurement practices, modelling reference buildings, and defining reference databases. We are currently in the "Pre-Public Consultation" phase. Final approval is anticipated in the second half of 2025, with the first certifications for construction projects completed by November 2025 expected in early 2026.

STUDIES & RESEARCH
Market Analyses in Holzkurier:
In the fourth quarter of 2024, the timber market was shaped by elevated log prices in Northern Europe and customs policy developments in North America. Nordic companies, in particular, benefited from high price levels despite facing margin pressures and an oversupply of timber products. Tariffs imposed on Canadian exports led to short-term volatility in sawn timber prices. Meanwhile, forest owners increasingly capitalized on opportunities in natural climate solutions, such as solar energy and carbon capture & storage projects. Read the full (german) article.
CHART OF THE DAY
Chart: The charts above, taken from the latest Holzkurier article (german), illustrate the decarbonization potential and associated costs of selected building materials. While CO₂ mineralization in concrete achieves a reduction of 0.1–0.5 kg CO₂ per kg of product, material costs can increase by up to 300%. In contrast, mass timber (CLT) stands out due to its substantial carbon storage capacity and significantly better climate profile. The analysis clearly highlights the growing ecological and economic importance of timber as a building material.
